Maliha lived in the remote Alishang valley in the Laghman province of Afghanistan. Life was simple, she lived and worked on her father’s farm, and when she wasn’t tending the fields she played. But recently life had gotten more complicated. Soldiers, from Afghanistan had built a base. The last group hadn’t left their base very much, but this new group did.
Her Papa said not to worry, but she was young. There seemed to be so much she didn’t understand, like why her uncle was so afraid when the soldiers came to their home. But he wasn’t afraid of them. He feared something else.
The more afraid she was, the tighter she held her bear, a gift from her deceased mother. And the tighter she held her bear, the tighter her bear held her back.
